Off Topic / Anyone seen this Nokia advert?
« on: September 08, 2006, 11:52:57 PM »
Sorry to start a new topic, but I'm curious if anyone in the UK has seen a Nokia advert featuring a little old woman on a scooter who asks a man "How do you get to Carnegie Hall?” The woman is my grandmother, Cecilia Dunphy, and she was stopped on the street in NY and asked to be in that commercial. It was filmed back in March and we've all been waiting for it to show here in the US but she just received a check today for royalties on UK airings. So, I guess that means it's not airing here in the States. Bummer. We were all so excited about it.  :(

Has anyone seen the ad?

Beauty and Fashion Secrets / Laser hair removal
« on: May 28, 2006, 06:03:39 PM »
Lately, a friend of mine has been raving about her laser hair removal. She had her legs, underarms, and bikini area done at a local spa clinic. It took her several visits over the course of 6 months but now that summer has arrived she's all set. Has anyone here tried this technology? It's pricey and definitely not within my budget right now but, since much of my job requires working in a swimsuit and shorts, I can't stop fantasizing about never having to shave again...  :P

Beauty and Fashion Secrets / Acrylic Tips
« on: September 19, 2005, 01:32:02 AM »
Has anyone ever had false nail tips put on at the manicurist? My nails are disgusting so I'm considering getting them for a wedding that I am in. I've heard mixed things.  Some say they destroy your natural nail...others say not if they are applied/removed correctly. Any thoughts?

FYI: It's uncensored and about 30 minutes long...

Beauty and Fashion Secrets / Lip Fusion

I just saw an ad for this in the Sephora catalog. I was wondering if any of you had tried it and if it actually lives up to its claims. Apparently it just earned the Good Housekeeping Seal so there must be some truth to what they're advertising. Anyone?

Off Topic / Revelations miniseries on NBC
« on: April 14, 2005, 03:39:51 PM »
Since ABC was airing a rerun of LOST last night I decided to tune in to the first episode of the much-hyped NBC miniseries Revelations.  I wasn't expecting much and fully thought it would be a little too religious and/or a little too cheesy for my tastes. Still, I figured if John Rhys-Davies and Bill Pullman had joined the cast it had to have some redeeming qualities. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. It was actually very entertaining and one scene even got the hair to stand up on the back of my neck.

Did anyone else watch it?

Beauty and Fashion Secrets / Haircolor Nirvana
« on: April 05, 2005, 06:45:43 PM »
Sorry to open a new topic about this but I have just been introduced to the miracle that is "deposit only color gloss" and figured that if there was one woman left on Earth who hadn't heard of the stuff then it was my duty to tell her about it.

Some of you have heard me complain about my over-processed hair's inability to hold color for very long. A few years back I decided I would look fabulous as a blonde so I lightened my hair. Big mistake. (See my picture in the LLT photo book.) When I decide to go back to brown everything washed out and left a new root line (even the "24 shampoo” kits).  <_< So, about a month ago, I'm having dinner with my friend's new girlfriend who is a colorist at the local Aveda salon. I tell her my problem; she looks at my hair and tells me she'd be happy to fix it. Then she says "but since you're a grad student (i.e. poor) why don't we just go to Sally's (a salon supply store here in the States) and we can pick up the stuff for under $10". We did, and $7.63 and 15 minutes later I had a gorgeous head of incredibly shiny brown hair. Now, I wasn't completely sold...I needed to wait a few weeks to see how the washout went. I'm happy to report that now, almost a month later, most of the color has held and even with the fading I have NO root line. And, my hair still looks shinier than before. So...I'm going back to Sally's to buy more and will see if I can actually keep this up long enough to grow out my tortured hair and be rid of the mess altogether. She said that it's great for subtle brightening too because it just layers a translucent, high gloss color over your existing hair color without lifting it. Kind of like a henna rinse but without the fear of messing up your hair if you decide you'd like to dye or highlight over it.

Anyway. I'm sure many of you already knew of this manna from heaven, but for those of you who didn't consider yourself enlightened. :D

Lord of the Rings / The Green Dragon
« on: February 09, 2005, 04:47:25 PM »
Last weekend I was at The Green Dragon Tavern in Boston with friends and it got me thinking about things that share names with Tolkien places/characters. I know the Green Dragon wasn't named for the hobbit hangout (it's been a fixture in Boston since before the American Revolution) but I'm sure there are other places that are. If you know of any please share them here!

General Liv Discussion / Schools that Liv attended growing up
« on: January 20, 2005, 09:47:45 PM »
I was flipping through Rebel Heart at the bookstore the other day and noticed that Bebe named the schools that Liv attended while she was growing up. This afternoon, in a moment of boredom, I decided to look them up online:

The Congressional School - Falls Church, Virginia (where Liv attended first grade)
Breakwater School - Portland, Maine  (her primary school)
York Prep - New York, New York  (her secondary school)

Apologies in advance if this a repeat of an earlier topic…

Liv's Family / Mia & Celebrity Fit Club
« on: January 08, 2005, 05:25:42 PM »
Since Mia's new reality show premieres tomorrow night I thought it might be time to give it it's own thread. Just for the record the first episode will be broadcast at 11PM EST on VH1. It will be rebroadcast multiple times during the week (daily it looks like) so if you miss it you can catch it another time. Unfortunately I canceled my cable subscription so, unless they post episodes for download, I will just have to live vicariously through you folks. Go Mia!

Mods: I just realized tht this probably belongs in Off Topic.

General Liv Discussion / Liv sighted at The Quick's Nov. 13th show
« on: November 21, 2004, 08:14:28 PM »
From the celebrity sightings (November 16th archive):

At Dru Hill's on Greenwich I saw a VERY pregnant Liv Tyler rocking out to her husband Royston Langdon's band The Quick. She looked beautiful and rubbed her giant baby filled belly to the music. She was with a hip group of friends, and I know they were hip because they were allowed to smoke inside the club and blow smoke in Liv's pregnant face!

I think they meant to type "Don Hills" (a nightclub in NYC) not "Dru Hill's". The comment about her friends being so hip that they are allowed to smoke refers to a citywide ban on smoking in all NYC clubs, bars and restaurants.

Off Topic / Band Aid song re-recorded
« on: November 15, 2004, 12:53:34 AM »

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Twenty years after the release of one of the biggest singles of all time, leading British artists gathered on Sunday to re-record the Bob Geldof-inspired charity hit "Do They Know It's Christmas?"

Here's a link to the snippet:

I always mark the true beginning of the holiday season by when I hear the 80s version playing over a mall loudspeaker somewhere. Should be interesting to hear a new take on it. Story says it hits the airwaves on November 29th.
