Help and Feedback / English trouble
« on: July 05, 2008, 09:49:01 AM »
Once again I have to ask for your advice... everyone who can help me gets some ice-cream! ;)
I have to write a paper for my English study in Sociolinguistics.. and I'm not quite sure whether the sentence structure etc of these parts is right..
maybe you can read the following lines and tell me whether I can leave it like that or not.

Nielsen Media Research rated that the age group of viewers ranges from 18 to 34. According to the New York Times, the creator and producer Josh Schwartz, himself a former screenwriter, wrote approximately 16 of the drafts of the first episode and rewrote the majority of the others.

One possibility for additional research is to take Holmes’ further subcategories into account. With this strategy one could receive a clearer result of stereotypical apologetic behavior between men and women.

I appreciate every answer! :D

Niph - have you already tried to pin up the top portion of your hair with clips and then blowdried it?

Bel - I think the first version sounds very nice. :)

After ages of searching I finally found the perfect hairdresser. Today I went to him for the second time, but he told me that he's going to move to New York next week...*sniff*

Thanks for your effort! :D
I don't like this subject either, lol.. it's quite boring actually. But it's one of the courses I had to take at uni and I already panic when I think of the upcoming exams, haha..

I think the content itself is right, I just wasn't sure whether I made any grammatical or spelling mistakes. :) I'm already unsure about my English skills when I want to post something in this forum...

Hey everyone! :)

I have to prepare a presentation for tuesday. It's for my morphology course and the subject is punctuation.
I have to decide between punctuation according to prosody and according to grammar.
Therefore I also prepared an exercise where my fellow students have to list the advantages of each variation. Now I'd like some native English speaker to take a look at it.. I'm not quite sure whether I made some grammatical mistakes, so help would be very much appreciated! :D You can also tell me when you'd change or reword something.

Here it is:

Two styles of punctuation:

1. According to prosody: => boundary signals like commas are used at places where tone unit boundaries would occur in reading
-> based on the medium-dependent expression system of intonation

Example:    Freda leapt down from the gate, and as Sebastian came forward her look of recognition unmixed with any surprise, contrived to suggest that for her, the sudden appearance of someone who had been away for half her lifetime was the most commonplace event imaginable.

2. According to grammar: => boundary signals reflect grammatical boundaries
-> more objective: based on the medium-independent expression system

Example:    Freda leapt down from the gate and, as Sebastian came forward, her look of recognition unmixed with any surprise contrived to suggest that, for her, the sudden appearance of someone who had been away for half her lifetime, was the most commonplace event imaginable.

Exercise: What are the advantages of prosodic punctuation and grammatical punctuation?

(the answers would be...

prosodic punctuation:
+ decoding help for the reader
+ more room for individual interpretation in this area than in grammar

grammatical punctuation:
+ more objective, because it is based on the medium-independent expression system)

I was listening to my iPod on the bus home today, and The Weakness In Me by Joan Armatrading comes on. It's one of my favourite songs and it makes me sad by itself, but I first heard it in 10 Things I hate About You, the gorgeous scene where Patrick secretly watches Kat playing guitar in the shop, and then walks up to her in the bookstore. Thinking about Heath's eyes as he walked along behind the row of books and you could only see part of his face, it pure made me burst into tears. Fortunately there was only one other person on the bus.
I love that scene...  as well as the song!
I still can't believe he's gone.. in many situations I have to think of certain scenes of either 10 things or A Knight's Tale because I've seen these films so often and I connect many good memories with them.  And now there's always this bitter repercussion (is that the right translation? My English skills have become a little rusty lately) when thinking of them...

Michelle looks lovely in those pics!
