Tolkien poetry - The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun
« on: April 23, 2009, 07:54:56 AM »
This book is not middle earth but poetry based and rewritten in different form, from the Old Norse poetry. For fans it should be a very good read. I'm going to read it anyhow and am really looking foward to it !!

Good article http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2009/04/22/31886-christopher-tolkiens-foreward-to-sigurd-and-gudrun/#more-31886

It's based from scandinavian writings of the 13th century called the elder edda or poetic edda. J.R.R Tolkien has produced some 500 stanzas from this.

...Right, so he did actually write/translate/whatever the contents of the book?

Oh yes, his own literature . But they are not translations. They are done in a completely different style from the original poems\writings and with his own personal slant on the Nordic legend that the "poetic edda" itself is about. I read too that he had to fill in gaps from the original writings because some sections of the original book have been lost for many centuries. :)

Wanna bet? :P
I second that :P

It definitely sounds interesting! I'm currently re-reading the LOTR triology, but I might take a peek at this afterwards, I love old legends and myths of any kind but Old Norse is one I haven't ever really looked too deep into, should be good :)
