Gunpowder

Gunpowder is set in the year 1605 and chronicles the attempt made by Fawkes and a group of provincial English Catholics to blow up the House of Lords and kill King James I, all in an effort to help restore a Catholic to the crown. Among them was Robert Catesby (Harington), who was said to be the mastermind behind the operation. The plot was ultimately thwarted by authorities after explosives were spotted near Westminster Palace.
Tyler has been cast as Catesby’s concerned cousin, Anne Vaux, while Gatiss will assume the role of King James’ “spymaster-in-chief” Robert Cecil, who was instructed to hunt down and torture those involved in the sinister plan. Mullan plays Jesuit Father Garnet, who despite his unfavorable view of King James I, wanted to keep the peace.

Production on Gunpowder, which is being written by Ronan Bennett (Channel 4’s Top Boy), will commence later this month. A Stateside network or streaming service has not yet acquired the drama.

New article with two more photos - Telegraph

Liv Tyler isn’t an actress you associate with a British period drama. She first showcased her English accent in Onegin (1999), and again when playing Arwen, an elven princess in the Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001-03). ‘I moved to London last August,’ she explains, when we meet in a break between filming. Her partner, Dave Gardner, a sports agent, is  British.

They have two children together, Sailor, two, and Lula, 15 months. (Tyler also has an older son, Milo, 12, from an earlier marriage.) ‘And I was getting excited to be in London, then this came up and it was exactly what I needed. A perfect amount of work, a lot of substance and something that interested me. As an American I don’t know very much about Bonfire Night, but I also don’t think English people know that much about it either.’

As Anne Vaux, Tyler’s beauty is hidden under a bonnet, ruff, collar, corset and farthingale (hoop skirt). She has an austere central parting in her hair.   But she has been most challenged by the set: about 75 per cent of the eight-week shoot has been in Dalton Mills, an abandoned textile mill.

Plus there have been many tons of fake mud imported to capture the filth of 17th-century London. She says the ‘scuttling creatures’ living in the mill included feral cats.

‘We’re all sick,’ says Tyler. She coughs. ‘That is my mud cough.’

Short interview at Whatontv.co.uk:
What can you tell us about Anne?

Quote
Liv Tyler: “Anne is a staunch Catholic woman, and she played a very important role in helping to protect and hide priests. In this story she has a very strong relationship with Father Garnet (Peter Mullan), who was a very prominent priest at that time; they have a beautiful friendship.”

How much did you know about the Gunpowder plot?

LT: “Very little! You hear a lot about
Guy Fawkes because he was the one who was caught red-handed, but you don’t always hear what
was going on religiously and politically at the time, and why
they did what they did.”

Why did you want to work on British TV?

LT: “I’d just moved to London, and having spent the previous two years growing babies I wanted
to dive into a creative project headfirst. My English agent has wonderful taste and she came to me with this. I really liked it and
I’m enjoying revisiting my English accent that I used for Lord of the Rings. I like BBC dramas anyway –
I loved The Fall and Happy Valley.”
