Arwen dress design stolen and sold on ebay!

Eeks, this is awful....

Kiwi Oscar winner Ngila Dickson's Lord of the Rings costume design has been ripped off and sold on the internet for more than $40,000

A US businessman bought what he thought was the grey riding dress worn by Arwen (Liv Tyler) in the hit trilogy. US police believe it is part of a film memorabilia forgery scam as none of the original Lord of the Rings (LOTR) trilogy costumes have left New Zealand.

But Dickson said the buyer was naive to think he could get an original. "I have seen people copy these costumes but the result was what I could only describe as laughable. If somebody buys that they get what they deserve, really," said Dickson.

Dickson is back in the country celebrating her Oscar win for costume design in The Return of the King. She is heading back overseas to work on her next project, Mission Impossible 3, with Tom Cruise.

"Any important costumes these days are held by the studios. It would be an extraordinary thing to be able to buy some of these pieces," said Dickson.

She said she would know in a "nanosecond" if a LOTR costume was a fake. "Even the most simple garment went through such a raft of processes to get it to the reality standard for film that Peter (Jackson) wanted, I just don't think it's possible."

She said Arwen's dress could have been targeted because it featured in the travelling LOTR exhibition at Te Papa last year. "Those kinds of costumes would be more vulnerable to copying."

Julia Roberts' Pretty Woman brown, polka-dot dress and Kate Winslet's beaded dress from the Titanic have been other high-profile rip-offs.

But there is little chance LOTR fans will get their hands on a costume from the films.

"The one thing that is an absolute is that they are treasures for Peter (Jackson) and Fran (Walsh) and they are going nowhere if he can help it. He has no intention of letting them sell on (internet auction site) eBay."

Dickson will not be rejoining Jackson's team for its remake of King Kong, instead favouring Mission Impossible.

"This is the biggest, grittiest version of Mission Impossible that they want to do, so hopefully I can give it a helping hand."

So next time your browsing ebay with a few thousand dollars to spare (haha) dont go buying any LOTR costumes!

Yeah, with buying over the internet you wouldnt get to see the dress first. Dont you think the person would have done some investigating before blowing that kind of money! jesus. what an idiot. And they must have money to burn.

:jestera: that is so funny! ebay have a lot to answer for :D although that guy must have been pretty daft to blow that much money without asking for a certificate of authenticity- just think of all the paperwork involved in trying to purchase an original LOTR costume- did he really think he could do it in a couple of mouse clicks? what a plonker!
